Bright, creamy, and ready in 10 minutes, this zingy orange-and-grapefruit smoothie is a standout breakfast or snack. Don’t be surprised to find yourself recalling how good it was hours later! Avocado and frozen mango provide a creamy base and make a nice change from the usual banana-based blend, while turmeric deepens the golden hue and adds antioxidant goodness. (Be sure to include the pinch of black pepper: It boosts turmeric’s anti-inflammatory effect!) If you like, finish with a sprinkle of orange zest and a few hemp (or chia) seeds for extra protein and omega-3s.

Tip

Turmeric: If using a high-power blender, you can substitute ½ teaspoon peeled and coarsely chopped fresh turmeric for the ground turmeric. Be forewarned that fresh turmeric may cause the blender jar to discolor.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium oranges
  • 1 cup frozen unsweetened mango chunks
  • ½ to ⅔ cup unsweetened, unflavored plant-based milk
  • ½ cup fresh grapefruit juice
  • ½ of a medium avocado, peeled
  • ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric (see tip, recipe intro)
  • Pinch freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons hemp seeds or chia seeds

Instructions

  • If you like, use a vegetable peeler to remove a few strips of orange zest for garnish. Cut peel off oranges and discard. Cut each orange into a few pieces, removing any seeds.
  • In a blender combine orange pieces, mango chunks, ½ cup milk, the grapefruit juice, avocado, turmeric, and pepper. Cover and blend until very smooth, scraping sides of blender as needed and adding more milk if needed to achieve desired consistency. Pour smoothie into glasses. Sprinkle with hemp seeds and garnish with orange zest strips (if using).
