There’s something about the warmth and complexity of the spices in Moroccan cuisine that inspires me to create new dishes using them. When Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986, there was little awareness of the highly destructive effects of factory farming. I wanted to see for myself what was happening, so I spent years visiting farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, undercover, to document the conditions at these operations. What I found was living animals discarded like garbage, thrown into trash cans or heaped onto piles of dead animals. Sick, injured, and immobile animals were left to suffer for hours, even days, without receiving food, water, or veterinary care. The abuse I witnessed was appalling. We stepped in to rescue these individuals, and Farm Sanctuary’s vital shelter work began.

Most doctors will tell patients with high blood sugar, or congested arteries to “watch what they eat.” More often than not this is vague advice that translates into nothing more than insignificant changes to the patient’s diet. The doctor’s approach is comparable to handing a painkiller prescription to someone repeatedly banging their head against the wall – and not asking the patient to stop the banging.
I am a 29 year old minister, currently living in Lewisburg, WV. Calcium supplements are thought to be good for the bones, but a new study warns they might be bad for the heart.
A report released Friday in the journal Heart found an alarming result: taking a calcium supplement to prevent bone loss puts people at a significantly greater risk for heart attacks. The 24,000 participants in the study, all between the ages of 35 and 64 and taking calcium supplements regularly, were found to be a whopping 86 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those who did not take supplements.
